AWFW Commentary: Super Storms, Climate Change and Meat Consumption

Food shares continue… see list below.
Thursday: November 8th
Thank you to our members who in three days contributed an additional $1750 to our $3500, sending a total $5250 for food and supplies directly to on-the-ground groups and individual volunteers.
Keith (who is the lead organizer pictured here and who also trained the volunteers for the Ethiopian Food Share Program), reports:
“Our volunteers have prepared hundreds of meals every day. We have been sending out teams to the most hard hit areas including Coney Island, Red Hook, Rockaway, Staten Island, and Hoboken (NJ). We will be adding Brighton Beach to our route as soon as this next storm passes… Everyone is really stepping up to help. So heart warming… People are so grateful for the help.”
Special thanks to Earth Balance in New Jersey for their incredible donation of 2700+ jars of their Coconut Peanut Butter Spread and 96 cases of Glutino Barbeque Chips. We are grateful to continue our relationship as they are also regular supporters our PB&J Campaign.
Thanks also to DrinkMore Water, Silver Spring Coop, and Costco for their assistance.
Volunteers are committed to keeping up efforts even in the face of the new snow storm, the nor’easter. Donations are still needed and appreciated.
Friday, November 2
Local NYC and Long Island groups that are already experienced in providing vegan food to those in need are organizing themselves and dozens of new volunteers to prepare & distribute hot food to storm victims.
We have two lead trainers (including the Keith who organized the weekly food shares with us in Ethiopia), driving to NYC to further organize and bring much needed supplies.
–> Washington, DC
We are gathering food and supplies from generous local retailers. Specifically, we’re collecting rice, dried beans, cooking oil, peanut butter, water jugs, and cooking utensils.
We’re also requesting financial donations to directly send with them so they can purchase onsite more food, supplies, and gas for vehicles.
–> Onsite
Volunteers are:
- distributing food
- finding new locations to prepare & share food
- rescuing food before it goes bad from grocery stores
- finding vehicles & transport routes that are passable (right now, we a truck or van to go to the Hunts Point Produce Market in the Bronx).
Brooklyn (NY)
We’re helping volunteers share food in the Fairway Market area near 480 Van Brunt Street in the Red Hook area — e-mail Chris.
Long Island (NY)
We’re helping volunteers share food at the intersection of Lafayette & Marcy and saving food from spoiling in groceries and distributing food starting tomorrow — e-mail Jon.
Hoboken (NJ)
We’re helping organize volunteers in Hoboken for food shares with people in need — email.
Why Our Help Is Needed
In addition to extremely limited phone and internet, many roads are blocked and gas stations closed making it exceptionally difficult to get to food, water, and other essentials to those in need. Government services need help from local groups and volunteers to provide more food. Plus, our food not only nourishes bodies without harming animals, it lifts spirits in presence of care and compassion.
